The Sunshiner - Grapefruit Saffron Gin Recipe

Glass bottle with golden liquid and intricate patterns, set against a sunny, blurred background, creating a warm, inviting mood.

"The Sunshiner" is a fantastic modern gin, with the edge of the Grapefruit being uplifted by the warming sweetness of Saffron, Cardamom and Rose.

All together they combine with a deep yellow colour for a unique gin recipe that will bring sunshine back into your life - even in the deepest winter.

Ingredients

The following portions are appropriate for a 700ml distillation

  • 6g Juniper

  • 1.5 tsp Cardamom Pods

  • 1.5 tsp Coriander Seeds

  • 6 Pink Peppercorns

  • Good pinch of Orris Root

  • 2 tsp Angelica Root

  • 2 large slices Dried Grapefruit

  • 1 slice Dried Orange

  • 1 tsp dried Rose Petals

  • 3 Saffron threads

Method

  1. Light the crush the Juniper, Cardamom, Coriander, and Peppercorns in a mortar and pestle.

  2. Tear the Grapefruit and Orange slices by hand into smaller pieces.

  3. Place all ingredients - besides the saffron threads! - into the botanical column of your still.

  4. Place the saffron threads into the container you are using to capture your distilled liquor. Strain them out once the distillation is done and you have diluted to the appropriate strength.

Notes

  • If you do not have a mortar and pestle, you can use a rolling pin or handle of a kitchen knife to bruise the ingredients.

  • The Saffron will make your gin a lovely rich shade of yellow. Your friends may compare it to the colour of certain bodily fluids, but rest content in the knowledge that you're a better class of person than them.
